GUWAHATI: India exported 22.98 million kg more tea in the calendar year 2024 than in 2023, both on quantity and price fronts.
The Tea Board of India revealed provisional export details of Indian tea for the calendar year 2024 today.
According to the board’s statistics, the country as a whole exported 254.67 million kg of tea in 2024—from January to December. In the calendar year 2023, India exported 231.69 million kg of tea. The difference, thus, stands at 22.98 million kg, which is 9.92 percent more than that of 2023.
The zone-wise breakup of the 254.67 million kg of tea exported in 2024 is 154.81 million kg from the North India zone and 99.86 million kg from the South India zone. The tea being exported from Assam comes under the North India Zone.
On the price front, the statistics of the Tea Board of India have revealed that the country exported tea at the average price (unit price) of Rs 279.24 per kg in 2024, as against an average price of Rs 231.69 per kg in 2023. The total value of tea exported from India in 2024 was Rs 7111.43 crore as against Rs 6160.86 crore in 2023. Though the country exported more tea in the calendar year 2024, the production of tea in the country, including Assam, did fall when compared to the production in the calendar year 2023.
In Assam, the production of tea was 649.84 million kg in 2024—338.57 million kg by big growers and 311.27 million kg by small growers. On the contrary, the state produced 688.33 million kg of tea in 2023—361.81 million kg by big growers and 326.52 million kg by small growers.
