GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that police reports suggested that Dilwar Hussain Mozumder of a digital news portal had abused a man belonging to a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community and demanded a loan from the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank in Guwahati. He said that the tribal man’s statement had been recorded in court on Thursday.
Briefing the media on Thursday, the Chief Minister termed Mozumder as a businessman working part-time for the portal that is owned by a politician. The Chief Minister also said that the arrest was in no way connected with Mozumder’s professional work.
The Chief Minister said that Mozunder owned four or five dumpers, besides other businesses.
The Chief Minister said that the state government had not yet recognised digital portal workers as journalists, nor has it issued ID cards to them. Talks are going on with journalists on whether the government should recognise those who work in portals as journalists, he said.
Meanwhile, Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar was re-arrested on Thursday in connection with a second case registered against him at Panbazar Police Station. The case (No. 111/25) was filed based on a complaint from the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, and it falls under Sections 329, 324(4), 351(2), 309(4), and 115 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On March 26, Mazumdar was granted bail in the first case filed against him. The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup (M) granted him bail in Case No. 110/25, which was registered under Section 351(2) of the BNS and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015). The case was lodged based on a complaint by Sishupal Boro, a security guard at the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd.
