GUWAHATI: The Dispur police on Wednesday night arrested two conmen from Baghorbori here after they duped and swindled Rs 9.75 lakh from a Madhya Pradesh-based woman.
Police sources identified the arrested duo as Saiful Islam and Piyar Hussain, both residents of Kachuwa in the Nagaon district.
Police sources said that they received a complaint from the victim that the two conmen had taken the money in two instalments after promising to quadruple the amount to Rs 40 lakh. The victim paid Rs 4.75 lakh earlier and Rs 5 lakh inside a car on Wednesday. The conmen paid Rs 10,000 as first instalment of 'profit', but barring a few currency notes the others were all fake.
The police subsequently nabbed both conmen and raided a flat in Disha Apartment of Bhagaduttapur and recovered a currency printing machine and incriminating documents.
A case (2110/22 u/s 120(B)/406/420 IPC) has been registered in this connection. Both the Islam and Hussain were produced in court and they were remanded to two days in police custody.
