GUWAHATI: Dispur Police Station has been staggering under a huge workload for years and on. Believe it or not, since 1990 the police station has not been able to dispose of as many as 7,628 pending cases. The prime reason, according to insiders, is lack of adequate manpower.

For the importance of its location, this police station receives the highest number of cases. This apart, MLAs, top-level bureaucrats and other heavyweights lodge their complaints mostly in this police station.

According to official records, in 2016 as many as 3,218 cases were registered in this police station, 3,591 in 2017, 3,962 in 2018 and 750 till date in 2019. The trend of lodging complaints in the police station is increasing. According to insiders, most of the cases are of cheating that generally come under section 420, crime against property, thefts, family disputes, accidents etc.

Even as the number of cases being received keeps on increasing every successive year, the manpower is not being raised. There has been a big gap between the sanction strengths of various posts in the police station and the actual number of people working there.

There is one inspector in the police station against its one sanctioned post, only 14 sub-inspectors against the sanctioned strength of 18, only four assistant sub-inspectors against nine sanctioned posts, 12 head constables against the sanctioned posts of 10, only three nayaks against nine sanctioned posts, not a single lance nayak against nine sanctioned posts and only 30 constables against 90 sanctioned posts.

On cases remaining pending in the police station, a source, who does not want his name to be disclosed, said: “Gauging the importance of this police station the authorities should post experienced personnel here. However, apart from lack of adequate manpower, we’ve some inexperienced sub-inspectors who can’t do the job properly. We need to teach them. In such a situation the workload is set to get piled up.”
