GUWAHATI: The State Government and district administration have failed to bring down the prices of the essential items, including vegetables in the city. Although a temporary decrease was noticed in the prices of certain items, the prices are on a rising curve yet again.
The price of onions is the latest one to be inflated suddenly. Onions were available at around Rs 30 for a kg a few days back, are now sold for nearly Rs 50 per kg. Small vegetable sellers blame the price hike on the wholesalers, while they pass it on to the suppliers. But the local people, who are the end consumers feel the burden of the inflated prices of the essential food items.
Apart from the onions, the prices of tomatoes remain at a considerably high price of Rs 120 per kg and so are the prices of carrots. Shillong radishes and beans are sold for Rs 60. Pumpkins are sold for Rs 70 per kg. Even the usually cheap papayas have reached Rs 50 per kg. It remains to see if the officials concerned and departments can take the steps necessary to bring inflation under control.
