EC revises Star Campaigner norms: Parties asked to submit revised list for Majuli bye-election

GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (EC) has revised the norms of Star Campaigners as the numbers of both active and new COVID-19 cases are receding and also both the Central and the State Governments have gradually lifted the restrictions imposed to check the spread of the pandemic, stated a press release.

The Election Commission has decided to restore the maximum limit on the number of Star Campaigners as specified under Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 for all ongoing and future elections.

The maximum limit on the number of Star Campaigners for recognised National and State political parties will be 40 and for other than recognised political party, it will be 20. The list of Star Campaigners will have to be communicated within a period of seven days from the date of the Notification of election and the list of additional Star Campaigners, if any, will have to be submitted to EC or the concerned Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) latest by 5pm on February 23.

Hence, the political parties will have to submit the lists of additional Star Campaigners, if any, for the ensuing bye-election to the 99-Majuli (ST) constituency of the Assam Legislative Assembly to the CEO, Assam or to EC, by 5pm of February 23.
