Guwahati: The Department of School Education has issued a formal clarification regarding the eligibility criteria for the post of Graduate Teacher (Mathematics), resolving confusion around subject requirements under the Assam Secondary Education (Provincialized Schools) Service (Third Amendment) Rules, 2024. In a speaking order issued on Friday, the department addressed ambiguity in the interpretation of the phrase “Physics, Chemistry, or Biology” used in the amended rules. Concerns had been raised over whether candidates were required to have studied all three subjects or just one. The clarification affirms that a candidate must have studied any one of the subjects—Physics, Chemistry, or Biology—as a pass course or minor subject, in addition to holding a Honours or Major in Mathematics. Alternatively, a Postgraduate Degree in Mathematics with similar supporting subjects and a minimum of 50% marks in Graduation or Postgraduation will also be considered valid. The department has directed all concerned officials, including Directors and Inspectors of Schools, to ensure compliance with this clarification during the ongoing recruitment verification process for Mathematics teachers.
