GUWAHATI: Election to the urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State may be held in the first half of 2022.
In Assam, there are 80 ULBs in general areas (other than Sixth Schedule areas). The ULBs include 33 municipal boards and 47 town committees. The main functions of the ULBs are urban planning and carrying out projects for economic and social development.
The term of the ULBs in Assam is five years. The term of the present ULBs had expired on March, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, the elections to the ULBs could not be conducted. The State Government is now mulling to conduct the elections in the first half of 2022 – by the end of January, 2022, or the first half of February, 2022 if the COVID situation in the State does not deteriorate.
The election to the ULBs will be conducted by the Assam State Election Commission. A source of the State Election Commission said that once the Assam Government gives its nod to conduct the polls, the Commission will start preparing for the polls. This will start with preparing the electoral rolls urban local body-wise.
