GUWAHATI: The All Assam Government NPS Employees' Association (AAGNPSEA) had a meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday evening. The association's president, Achyutananda Hazarika, said that "We discussed the issues relating to the National Pension System (NPS) and the teachers' and employees need for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), which acts as a shield to protect the retirement lives of the employees."

He said, "The Chief Minister acknowledged the stand of the association regarding the restoration of OPS. The CM said that OPS is a national issue on which the Government of India as well as the Government of Assam are to take a concrete decision. He said that DCRG's eligible retired government employees had already received their benefits."

"The association believes that the authorities concerned are reluctant to draw and disburse DCRG to 90 percent of retired people due to unknown reasons, and they are facing tremendous inconvenience. Then the CM directed the Principal Secretary to collect information immediately and take appropriate action on the difficulties faced by the NPS teachers and employees. The Chief Minister asked the association to submit the information of those who had not received DCRG as yet. The association advocates a pension system under the Pension Rules of 1969 for all on equal terms instead of the revised pension. The association is of the firm opinion that the government should restore the old pension system," the President said.

The president further said, "The government's position on the implementation of the OPS is unclear, and there is only a rough perception of the intention at the central level on guaranteed revised pensions. The Chief Minister, however, agreed to have a discussion with the association next month."
