GUWAHATI: A team of officials of Palashbari Revenue Circle with the help of local police on Monday evicted around 15 families of encroachers from Mohmardiya char which is a Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) under Palashbari Legislative Assembly. As per revenue department rules there cannot be human settlement in PGR.

Sources informed that these families came to this location a few months back and set up huts at this char (riverine) area on the bank of Brahmaputra that was earlier used by local people for cultivation purposes. Following complaints by the local residents, revenue personnel visited the site and enquired about identities of settlers. They (settlers), however, failed to provide any convincing proof of their identities. They claimed to be erosion-affected people. The eviction drive was carried out by the team led by Circle Officer Suswapna Kakoty.

It has also been learnt that similar encroachments had taken place at the nearby char of Bhatkhowadiya last year. On that occasion as well, eviction was carried out at that location.
