GUWAHATI: Around 1500 farmers from across the state gathered for a farmers' convention organised by Sanjukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) at the ITA Pragjyoti Centre at Machkhowa on Tuesday.
The participants voiced their concern at the alleged anti-farmer and pro-corporate policies of the BJP government at the state and centre and sought to draw a roadmap for a state-wide united protest. Noted intellectual Hiren Gohain inaugurated the convention attended by five national leaders of the Morcha.
For the benefit of the national leaders, Hiren Gohain started off his welcome speech in English, during the course of which he spoke about the problems of the state's farmers as well as the general populace, before proceeding to address the farmers' representatives in Assamese. Gohain spoke about the entry of corporate capital in the agricultural sector, which is harming the farmers. He lauded the leaders of the Morcha for making the farmers' protest in Delhi a success, forcing the government onto the back foot. He stressed that nothing can be gained without protesting before the present dispensation, which is essentially anti-farmer. The convention was attended by national- level leaders of the SKM, including leaders like AIKS vice-president Hannan Mullah, AIKS general secretary Atul Kumar Anjan and others.
