GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury asked the Registry of the High Court to collate the data as regards the pendency of cases against the MPs/MLAs as on July 31, 2025 and submit a fresh status report.
The High Court today heard the suo motu writ petition (WPC 3/2020) taken up in terms of the direction issued by the Supreme Court for constitution of a special bench to try pending cases against sitting and former MLAs and MPs.
The bench said that as per its order issued on March 11, 2025, the Registry has submitted a report prepared on May 26, 2025 that shows the pendency status of cases against MPs/ MLAs. “However, the report does not specifically disclose the cutoff date, on which, the data has been taken into account. Mr. T.J. Mahanta, learned amicus curiae submits that since the time of filing of the report, some more cases, to his knowledge and information, have been disposed of but such data is not available on record. Since the primary purpose of constituting this special bench is to monitor the progress and disposal of cases pending against the MPs/ MLAs, it would be necessary to call for an updated report from the Registry in this regard.”
In view of the above, the court listed the matter for hearing again on August 4, 2025.
