GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, to inquire into misappropriation of funds in various bodies under the Urban Development Department, Government of Assam, for the period from 2009 to 2018 meant for development of the urban areas of the State of Assam.
The PIL was submitted by Amguri Naba Nirman Samity (petitioner) seeking a high-level investigation into the corruption in Guwahati Municipal Corporation, Guwahati Metro Development Authority and Amguri Municipal Board of Sivasagar district.
During a hearing in the case (PIL/84/2021), a divisional bench of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Malasri Nandi stated, "It has been submitted that the petitioner had learnt from various official sources that a huge amount have been misappropriated in the aforesaid institutions and accordingly, the present PIL has been filed after having failed to elicit any response from the authorities to make an enquiry into the aforesaid instances of corruption."
The court stated that the State Government should look into the matter. The court directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, "to examine the matter and pass appropriate order as expeditiously as possible, preferably, within a period of 6(six) weeks".
