GUWAHATI: The Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was supposed to attend a memorial meeting of Bhimbor Deori at Gauhati University (GU) on Saturday. However, due to massive protests by the students at the very entrance of the campus against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the CM had to make a getaway.

Holding placards and shouting slogans, the students made it clear that as long as the ruling Government stands resolute about the plan to table CAB, they will not let the CM enter the university premises. “Until we receive a written confirmation that CAB will not be tabled, the Chief Minister is not allowed to set foot in the university campus,” said a GU student.

The CM, in view of the ongoing protest at GU, made his way from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport through Deepor Beel instead of taking the GU road.
