GUWAHATI: Three Congress leaders – former minister Gautam Roy, former MP Santius Kujur and former Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) president Hiranya Bhuyan – formally joined the BJP at a function at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Sunday.

The three Congress leaders joined the BJP in the presence of State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Das, NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma and others. All the three former Congress leaders said that they joined the BJP after being impressed in the works being done by the BJP government.

Dass said, “They’re now BJP workers like us. Gautam Roy was projected as the king of Barak by the media much to the satisfaction of the Congress. However, now he’s not the king of Barak. He’s a common worker of the BJP.”

In his speech, NEDA convener Sarma said: “The BJP has a marked difference in its behavioural attitude with that of the Congress. The BJP has an ideology of its own. Since they’ve joined the BJP, they’ll have to shed their typical Congress attitude. If they continue to adhere to the Congress’ attitude, they’ll have to leave the party. They got a lot in the Congress. Now they’ll have to make themselves ready to give to the BJP. Such an attitude will help them mingle with the BJP. If anyone wants to give something to the society, the BJP is the right platform for it.”
