GUWAHATI: The Home and Political department are set to give biometric data enrollment centres back to the General Administration Department (GAD) as 99.2 per cent biometric data collection of the target NRC applicants is over. However, the Home and Political department are to retain a biometric enrollment centre with it in each revenue circle for the collection of data of the remaining NRC applicants.

The biometric data of 36.2 lakh applicants, who claimed for their inclusion in the final NRC, and two lakh other applicants, whose inclusion in the draft NRC had objections, had to be collected by the State Home and Political Department. The collection of such data had the approval of the Supreme Court of India. For the biometric data collection of these 38.2 lakh NRC applicants (36.2 lakh claimants+ 2 lakh applicants against whom there are objections), the Home and Political department had to take all biometric data collection centres working for Aadhaar enrollment under the GAD. Since February 2019 the biometric data collection work for Aadhaar enrollment has been put on hold.

Meanwhile, GAD sources said that it will resume its Aadhaar enrollment work in the State soon. The Home and Political department is going to send letters to the deputy commissioners for the handing over of biometric data collection centres back to the GAD for Aadhaar works.
