Guwahati: Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) has officially been accorded the status of a Regional Centre (RC) under the National Medical Commission for Medical Education Technology. This recognition follows an on-site inspection conducted by the Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) in September 2024.
The formal inauguration ceremony of the Regional Centre was held recently, at the GMCH Auditorium Complex in the presence of principals from medical colleges across Assam and the North East, Medical Education Unit (MEU) coordinators, faculty members, and students.
Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Bora, Vice Chancellor of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), and Dr. Siddharth Singh, Commissioner and Secretary of the Medical Education & Research Department, Government of Assam, graced the occasion as chief guests. Dr. Anup Kumar Barman, Director of Medical Education, Assam, attended as the guest of honour.
In his welcome address, Dr. Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH, emphasized the significance of this milestone in enhancing medical education in the region. The newly established RC will be responsible for conducting all Faculty Development Programmes for selected medical colleges in Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura. As part of its launch, the centre conducted its first Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) from April 7 to April 9, 2025. Thirty senior and junior faculty members from GMCH participated in the training.
