GUWAHATI: The Akhil Assam Gorkha Sammelan (AAGS) submitted a memorandum to the State Coordinator, NRC Assam appraising various difficulties faced by some of the members of the community while submitting the filled up forms with documents at different stages of hearing.

In its memorandum, the AAGS said, “In our community, a person may add his caste as his surname or title, likewise, Chetri or Chhetry, Limbu or Subba, tamang or Lama, Upadhayaya or Sharma, Pradhan or Shrestha or Newar. But his son or daughter may instead identify himself or herself by his clan (THAR) of the father or vice verse. If the father’s name is Bir Bahadur Chhetri (Chetri), his son Dhan Bahadur may write his name as Dhan Bahadur Thapa instead of omitting Chhetry or Chetri altogether. Here Thapa is the name of the clan to which the family belongs. Again, some may prefer to add his race or lineage (Gotra) instead of the caste or clan to which the family belong, though their parents might not have done.”

The AAGS further said, “Home Bahadur Chetry expired before the publication of the first draft of NRC. His wife has already expired before the process of NRC updating started. Home Bahadur Chetry submitted the filled up NRC form along with the names of his two minor sons aged 11 and 13 years at the Shillongkhuti NSK No 1612 under Mazbat Revenue circle of Udlaguri district. When the second draft of NRC was published, it is found that the names of the two minor sons of Late Home Bahadur Chetry were missing. And the concerned NSK intimated that the two minors were not included in the draft NRC because they were descendants of ‘D’ voters. We would like to know for certain what would be the result of those two minors.”
