Guwahati: The Assam Book Fair 2024 is attracting book lovers and literary enthusiasts from across the state. Organised by the Assam Publication Board, the 10-day event features 118 book stalls set up by publishers and booksellers from various parts of the country, along with 18 additional stalls offering diverse items. The fair will run until January 7, 2025. This year’s edition has drawn participation from 15 publishers based in Kolkata, 16 from New Delhi, and one from Gurgaon. Despite a modest budget of Rs 80 lakh compared to similar events, officials remain optimistic about its impact. Plans are underway to enhance the scale and reach of the book fair in future editions. The Assam Publication Board has already reported significant sales success in 2024, particularly in locations such as Duliajan, Jorhat, and Nalbari. Organisers are hopeful that the Guwahati event will further boost these figures, given its steady stream of visitors and wide-ranging offerings. For attendees, the book fair is more than just an opportunity to purchase books—it is an annual cultural event.
A student expressed their enthusiasm, saying, “The book fair is like a festival for us. We wait for this the entire year. Although it is far from us this time, visiting regularly might not be possible.”
Another visitor shared, “I have already purchased six books and plan to buy more from my list. It feels great to be at the fair. Students get a good opportunity to find their books in one place.” However, some attendees reminisced about the fair’s earlier venue in Chandmari.
“Chandmari as a venue was more comfortable and easy for many of us. But no matter how far the venue is, visiting and buying books at this fair is another level of happiness,” said another student. The Assam Book Fair continues to be a cultural cornerstone, fostering a love for literature and providing a platform for readers and publishers to connect. The event promises a vibrant conclusion as it approaches its final days.
