GUWAHATI: The Assam government’s decision to allow 24-hour shop operations in Guwahati has been met with enthusiasm from residents, employees, and shop owners, who see it as a boost for the city’s economy. However, concerns regarding inadequate transportation and safety measures, particularly for night-shift workers, have also surfaced. While many welcomed the move, they stressed that people are not yet mentally prepared for this shift. The city’s transportation system currently does not support late-night operations, with government and private buses available only until 7 pm and private tempos running until 10 pm. Residents highlighted the urgent need to extend public transport services to make the system feasible. Jyotiman Pathak, a resident of Beltola, praised the government’s decision but pointed out the necessity of proper shift management and public safety at night. “The government should also take responsibility for the safety of people traveling at night. Since shops employ both male and female workers, ensuring the safety of female employees is crucial,” he said. A shopkeeper from Ganeshguri echoed similar concerns, stating that customer demand will determine the success of 24-hour operations. “For this to work, transportation services must be available at night. All these factors are interconnected,” he said. Gunjan Kalita, another city resident, highlighted the convenience of round-the-clock shopping but underscored the need for reliable transportation. “It will be helpful if shops operate 24/7, as we won’t have to worry about time constraints while buying essentials. However, bus services should be extended beyond 7 pm to facilitate late-night travel,” she noted. A resident from Jonali emphasized the need for security measures to maintain law and order at night. “We appreciate the government’s decision not to extend wine shop timings, but public safety and convenience must be prioritized in future policies,” they said. Speaking to this reporter, Kuldeep Boragohain, a fast-food stall owner, pointed out that the success of 24-hour shop operations will depend on location and the operating hours of neighboring businesses. “Shops in busy areas might benefit, but in other areas, it might not work as well unless all supporting businesses also remain open,” he explained. While the new policy has the potential to bring economic benefits, residents insist that the government must address key issues like safety, transportation, and worker welfare before the city fully adapts to the change.
