Guwahati: A 24-hour nationwide transport strike has been called for July 9 by central trade unions and employees’ federations to protest against what they term the central government’s anti-worker and anti-transport policies.
In Guwahati, a press meet was held on Monday where various transport unions extended their support to the strike. Among the participating bodies were the All Guwahati Tourist Taxi Drivers’ Union, Seven State Cab Operators’ Union, Greater Guwahati Tourist Maxi Cab Drivers’ Union, Guwahati Tourist Taxi Association, Assam Tourist Taxi Drivers’ Union, Guwahati Railway Taxi Drivers’ Union, All Guwahati Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Union, and All Assam E-Rickshaw Drivers’ Union.
The unions expressed their discontent with several recent policies and reforms. Their key demands include the immediate withdrawal of the Motor Vehicle Reforms Act 2019, which they described as anti-driver, and the scrapping of the “Hit and Run” clause under Article 106(2) of the Indian Civil Code (BNS). They are also pressing for the implementation of the Assam Motor Transport Workers Social Security Programme, previously announced by the state government.
Other demands raised by the unions include the immediate stoppage of the Photo Fine system, easing of complications related to Pollution Certificates and other vehicle documents, and the provision of welfare amenities. These include clean drinking water, low-cost canteens, toilets, and restrooms for commercial transport workers at every 60-kilometre interval along national highways.
The unions further demanded a ban on private vehicles ferrying passengers in place of commercial vehicles and urged the government to stop the alleged harassment and mistreatment of transport workers.
A representative of the Assam Tourist Taxi Drivers’ Union stated, “The Photo Fine system must be stopped. Long-distance drivers must be provided with shelter and access to basic amenities like drinking water. This strike is not just about protest—it’s about demanding dignity, respect, and proper rights for all motor transport workers.” The strike is expected to severely impact public transport services across Assam, particularly in Guwahati and adjoining areas. Commuters have been advised to make alternative travel arrangements in advance.
