GUWAHATI: The Crime Branch of Guwahati Police arrested three people for their alleged involvement in the demand for money from a businessman in the name of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), or ULFA (I), on Friday evening. The identities of the three accused were revealed as Gautam Talukdar (35) from Krishna Nagar in Japorigog under Dispur Police Station, Biki Thapa (32) from Panjabari under Satgaon Police Station, and Tapan Talukdar of Swaraj Nagar under Dispur Police Station.
According to police sources, a person named Deba Prakash Bhagawati of Baghorbori Tiniali on Satgaon Road under the Dispur Police Station reported that an unknown person was demanding money from him. Based on his complaint, a case was registered at Dispur Police Station (1757/2023 U/S 387 IPC), and the matter was investigated by the Crime Branch along with the Dispur Police Station team.
The unknown person called the businessman to Borbari, Hengerabari, and thereafter Swaraj Nagar areas with the direction to deliver Rs 5 lakh as the first installment of the payment on Friday. Upon informing the crime branch, it took swift action and was able to apprehend three suspects from the Swaraj Nagar locality under the Dispur Police Station. The police mentioned that the suspects had already confessed regarding their suspected involvement in the matter, and proper legal action has been initiated in the matter.
