Guwahati: The Assam Nagarik Samaj (ANS) has launched a scathing attack on the state government over its recent eviction drives in Dhubri and Goalpara, labelling the moves as “inhuman and condemnable” and accusing the authorities of facilitating a “corporate land grab” under the guise of development.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, president Ajit Kumar Bhuyan and general secretary Paresh Malakar alleged that the eviction campaigns are part of a broader conspiracy to displace indigenous and marginalized communities and hand over land to powerful corporate entities. “These evictions are not isolated actions,” said Bhuyan. “They are a systematic effort to hand over state land to big corporations like the Adani group, often under misleading pretexts such as development and infrastructure.”

The Samaj pointed to projects like the proposed satellite township in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council area, thermal power installations in Dhubri, and solar power sites in Karbi Anglong as examples of how land is being diverted for corporate use at the cost of local communities.

The organization underscored that many tribal and semi-tribal communities in Assam have historically been excluded from formal land ownership systems due to factors such as poverty, illiteracy, and administrative neglect. Even those attempting to regularize their land holdings often failed to do so due to their inability to pay land revenue, leaving them vulnerable to displacement.

Concluding the press meet, the organization called for public resistance and solidarity to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of those who have lived on their land for generations without formal ownership but with deep-rooted cultural ties.
