Guwahati: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), in collaboration with the All India Disaster Mitigation Institute (AIDMI), organized a crucial workshop on “Extreme Heat and Building Climate Resilience in Assam” at the Srimanta Sankaradeva International Auditorium, Guwahati, on Tuesday. Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management, graced the event as the chief guest.
The workshop focused on addressing the increasing threat of extreme heat and other climate-related challenges in Assam. It brought together experts, government officials, local communities, NGOs, and private sector representatives to discuss strategies for mitigating heat-related risks in the state and the broader north-eastern region.
Expressing concern over the rising frequency of heatwaves, Minister Mahanta emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the government and stakeholders to combat the growing crisis. He suggested implementing green building codes in educational institutions to enhance cooling and encouraged local-level innovative initiatives to mitigate the effects of extreme heat.
ASDMA Chief Executive Officer G. D. Tripathi highlighted the organization’s latest initiative, PRKRITI: Predicting Resilience through Knowledge-Driven Research Using Integrative Technological Innovation, launched on ASDMA Foundation Day on March 23. The competition aims to enhance local-level understanding of climate change impacts and encourage young minds to develop climate models based on real-world data. Details of the competition will soon be available on ASDMA’s website.
During the workshop, a booklet titled Key Action Areas for Addressing Extreme Heat in the Asia-Pacific: Lessons from Regional Platforms was released by Minister Mahanta and other dignitaries.
The workshop also saw participation from senior government officials, ASDMA representatives, and students from various educational institutions, reinforcing the importance of collective action in building climate resilience in Assam.
