Guwahati: As the New Year 2025 approaches, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has announced its decision to observe 2025 as the ‘Mother Tongue Year’ to promote and preserve the native languages of Assam’s indigenous communities. This declaration was made during an interactive session with journalists held at the AGP headquarters in Ambari, Guwahati.
Party president and Minister Atul Bora, along with working president and Minister Keshab Mahanta, while talking to the media, expressed hope that the coming year would bring peace, prosperity, and harmony to every household in Assam, strengthening unity and brotherhood across all communities, regardless of caste, creed, or language.
Addressing the media, Atul Bora emphasized that AGP has consistently implemented new resolutions each year to promote regional development. This year, the party plans to launch a year-long campaign titled “Gawe Gawe AGP, Sahare Nagare AGP” (AGP in Every Village, AGP in Every Town), aimed at strengthening regionalism and bringing AGP closer to the people across Assam.
In a significant announcement, AGP declared 2025 as ‘Mother Tongue Year,’ dedicating it to the preservation and promotion of the mother tongues of Assam’s indigenous communities. Bora highlighted that the party’s core objective during this period will be to foster linguistic harmony, cultural unity, and mutual respect among all ethnic groups in the state.
Reiterating AGP’s commitment to regionalism, Bora stated that recent developments have proven the relevance and importance of regionalism in Assam. As the flag-bearer of regional aspirations, AGP is determined to continue working closely with the people of Assam to accelerate development and prosperity in the state.
Bora also lauded Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, under which Assam has witnessed rapid growth and progress. He emphasized that safeguarding the interests of indigenous people and ensuring their development will remain one of AGP’s primary responsibilities.
Bora also highlighted the significance of implementing the Assam Accord; he mentioned that AGP has always prioritized the protection of Assam’s indigenous communities. He added that the state government has already taken several key decisions toward fulfilling the provisions of the Accord.
Regarding the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which focuses on safeguarding the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of Assamese people, Bora informed that the recommendations of the retired Justice Biplab Sharma Committee are being expedited. He also assured us that both the state and central governments are actively working to address the committee’s suggestions.
The AGP leaders further appealed to all party workers and the people of Assam to support the campaign and work collectively for the holistic development of the state. The event was attended by several senior AGP leaders, including general secretaries Prabin Hazarika, Manoj Saikia, Sunil Deka, Dr. Tapan Das, and Dharmeswar Roy; Vice Presidents Karnamohan Roy, Dr. Joynath Sharma, and others.
The AGP urged the people of Assam to join hands in this mission for development, unity, and cultural preservation, making 2025 a milestone year for progress and harmony in the state.
