GUWAHATI: In a bid to reduce traffic congestion and ensure smooth vehicular movement, the Guwahati Police have imposed a ban on all types of public processions and gatherings within the city limits with immediate effect. The ban covers rallies, marathons, runs, walkathons, and similar events that often disrupt traffic and cause inconvenience to the public.

The order was issued on Thursday by Imdad Ali, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), Police Commissionerate, Guwahati. It invokes the powers granted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. According to the police, such gatherings have repeatedly led to severe traffic jams, delays in emergency services, and general public inconvenience.

The official statement emphasized that public processions obstruct the free flow of traffic, leading to congestion and posing risks to public safety. “To minimize inconvenience and prevent anticipated traffic congestion, all types of procession, rally, run, marathon, walkathon, etc. within Guwahati City shall be restricted,” the order read.
