Guwahati: The state BJP has strongly condemned the alleged attack on Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy in Golaghat on Monday, terming it a “direct attack on democracy” and a reflection of the Congress party’s growing frustration.
Addressing the media at the party headquarters in Guwahati on Tuesday, BJP general secretary Rituparna Baruah accused the Congress of resorting to “Naxalite-like behaviour” due to its inability to counter the BJP’s “politics of liberation and development.”
“Even while in Opposition, the Congress is acting in an undemocratic manner. If they behave like this now, imagine the consequences if they ever return to power,” Baruah said. He added that attacking an elected Chief Minister reveals the Congress’s “true political character.”
In protest, the BJP Yuva Morcha (BJYM) staged sit-in demonstrations across all district and sub-divisional headquarters in Assam. Thousands of BJYM karyakartas from 39 organizational districts took part in the state-wide agitation, denouncing what they called the Congress’s “arrogant and undemocratic behaviour.”
Addressing the gathering, BJYM leaders decried the alleged attack, calling it an attempt to destabilize the state’s political environment. “Attacking the Chief Minister’s convoy is not just an insult to the government but a direct threat to Assam’s democratic values,” said a BJYM spokesperson.
Senior BJP leaders including state vice presidents Jury Sharma Bordoloi and Ratna Singh, general secretaries Diplu Ranjan Sarma and Rituparna Baruah, secretary Siddhanku Ankur Baruah, ASTC vice-chairman Pranabjyoti Lahkar, and BJYM state president Rakesh Das led the protest held by the city unit of BJYM.
