Guwahati: The gruesome murder of a 71-year-old woman, Bandana Das, in Guwahati’s Kharguli area has been solved within 24 hours, with police arresting her caretaker, Ratul Das, as the prime accused.

According to DCP (Central) Amitabh Basumatary said that Ratul confessed to slitting Bandana’s throat with a knife after entering her house by climbing the rear boundary wall on the night of July 1. Investigators noted a fresh cut on Ratul’s finger, which he initially failed to explain. Upon interrogation, he admitted to committing the crime.

Police said the victim was attacked while sleeping. Ratul removed the mosquito net and attacked her directly. During the struggle, Bandana reportedly realised his intent and a scuffle ensued, leading to the injury on Ratul’s finger.

After committing the murder, Ratul exited through the front door, threw away the knife and his blood-stained vest in a nearby drain. He then went home and confessed the act to his wife. The couple allegedly fabricated a false narrative in an attempt to frame someone else and informed Bandana’s brother and nearby residents.

Ratul, who had been working as a caretaker for the elderly woman, told police that he harboured resentment against her due to frequent scolding and verbal abuse directed at him and his family. He was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crime.

Meanwhile, Ratul’s wife, Kunjalata Das, has also been implicated in the case for concealing information.
