Guwahati: In a major crackdown on alleged corruption, the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell has arrested Surya Baruah, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Kokrajhar, in connection with a case of disproportionate assets. Baruah was detained in Kokrajhar on Sunday and brought to Guwahati after being formally arrested in connection with Case No. 10/25. He was produced before the Court, which remanded him to three-day custody of the vigilance cell. According to official sources, the arrest was made from a black Scorpio (registration number AS01FK0020), from which Rs 3,77,600 was recovered. An additional Rs 52,000 was found in Baruah’s personal possession.
Sources also revealed that the CDPO allegedly owns 12 luxury vehicles. Further investigations indicated that a petrol pump and a construction company are registered in his wife’s name.
Earlier this year, in January, the CM’s Vigilance Cell had conducted a raid at Baruah’s residence in Ananda Nagar, Bhangagarh. During the raid, sleuths recovered Rs 37 lakh in cash and a .32 pistol. Simultaneously, another raid was carried out at an under-construction building linked to Baruah in Aloknagar, Six Mile, Guwahati.
