GUWAHATI: The Assam government has officially decided to rename the historic Chabipul Chariali in Guwahati as Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chowk. This was announced by Assam's Public Health Engineering Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah during the celebrations marking the 135th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ambedkar.
This move is seen as a fitting tribute to arguably one of India's greatest reformist who fought for the marginalized sections of the society.
The renaming act highlights Ambedkar's lasting legacy as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and also emphasizes the crucial role played by him as a tireless crusader for social justice.
The name change was announced by the minister during a formal event in a day when Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated across the nation.
It may be noted that Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated every year on April 14 to recall the values of equality, liberty, and fraternity that Ambedkar championed throughout the course of his illustrious life.
Grand processions, community programs, and tribute are held across the country on this day, particularly in states like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh.
