Guwahati: City police script success story in first 3 months of 2025

From January to March of this year, Guwahati city police have seen considerable success in preventing burglary incidents in the city.

GUWAHATI: From January to March of this year, Guwahati city police have seen considerable success in preventing burglary incidents in the city. During these three months, 587 burglars involved in such crimes were arrested, and stolen items worth approximately Rs 5 crore were recovered in 530 registered cases, said Ankur Jain, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati Police Commissionerate.

According to Jain, in the category of crimes against property, within this period, 55 cases were solved within 6 hours, 59 within 12 hours, and 49 within 24 hours, demonstrating a significant achievement by the Guwahati Police.

In addition, intensive search operations were carried out in various scrap dump yards across Guwahati, leading to the recovery of numerous stolen items. During these raids, 41 scrap dump owners and workers who were found encouraging or aiding in such thefts were arrested.

The Guwahati Police also achieved remarkable success in curbing vehicle theft. In the past three months, the police recovered 22 four-wheelers and 81 two-wheelers and arrested 84 individuals involved in vehicle theft. During this period, police operations in Meghalaya and Manipur led to the busting of several international vehicle theft rackets.

To make Guwahati a drug-free city, the police have been conducting relentless and uncompromising operations. In the last three months, 192 drug peddlers have been arrested. A total of 140 cases have been registered under the NDPS Act. During this time, 4 kg of heroin, 300 kg of cannabis (ganja), and 7,000 bottles of cough syrup were seized.

The Guwahati Police have been making continuous efforts to make the city crime-free and safe. In the past three months, they successfully apprehended 20 snatchers and mobile phone thieves. It’s worth noting that police efforts have significantly helped in reducing such incidents, and legal actions have been taken against the accused, the police officer said.

In this period, a total of 239 missing persons have been traced and rescued. Additionally, 838 mobile phones were recovered and returned to their rightful owners. Moreover, the police successfully completed verifications of 4,923 passports, 795 PRCs, 1,987 Seva Setu documents, and 552 service and other verification-related applications, he said.

For the convenience of the public, the mobile helpline number 60269-00651, introduced by the Police Commissioner for filing complaints, received 1,051 messages over the past three months. Almost all relevant complaints have been resolved, and work is ongoing to resolve the remaining 42 cases, he added.

In the last three months, nearly Rs. 72 lakh was recovered from cyber criminals and returned to the victims. Additionally, cases involving 50 Facebook accounts, 39 Instagram accounts, 30 WhatsApp accounts, and 6 email accounts were resolved, he added.
