GUWAHATI: Repair work on the roads is something that the Guwahatians have been seeing for several years now, but the problem is, that the work has not seen the light of completion. One after another, roads are dug up, repaired in a few months and dug up yet again in a few days.

Several parts of the city including Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, Nayanpur, Hengrabari, GMC road and many others have been seeing this problem over the past several years. Although authorities act as if they are working on the repairs, the work the same is never seems to be complete and day after day people of the city continue to face the consequences. Several people have been injured and multiple people have died due to accidents caused by these poor-quality roads and unscientific and uncalculated digging. The recent death of yet another youth after falling into such a pit has been an example of such inept actions.

The bad conditions of the roads, aligned with the lack of proper street lighting further increase the risk on these roads. While drivers find it difficult to drive their vehicles on roads full of potholes, pedestrians find it impossible to walk as manhole covers are often missing increasing the risk of falling to death, along with injuries at several localities of the city.

Concerned citizens have also raised questions as to why the government as well as the local authorities are unable to take action against contractors who are responsible for ensuring that these roads are returned to proper condition after the work is completed, withing a particular duration of time.
