GUWAHATI: In a major crackdown on financial fraud, the Dispur Police have arrested a Guwahati-based doctor, Jyotirmoy Lahkar, for allegedly orchestrating a large-scale scam involving fake government work orders for medical equipment. The fraudulent scheme, which spanned across Assam, is estimated to have duped multiple victims out of several lakhs of rupees.
According to the police, the 32-year-old accused, a resident of Bishnunagar on VIP Road, had been absconding since August 2023. Despite holding genuine medical qualifications, Lahkar is believed to have leveraged his professional credibility to deceive fellow doctors and businesspersons in cities such as Guwahati and Jorhat, the police said.
The scam came to light following a complaint filed by Md. Samim Ali of FA Ahmed Nagar, Guwahati. In his First Information Report (FIR), Ali alleged that Lahkar had deceived him with a fabricated government work order and collected Rs 4 lakh under false pretences. During the subsequent investigation, police discovered that Lahkar had employed the same tactic to defraud several others. To obscure the trail of stolen funds, he reportedly funnelled the money through his wife’s bank account, the FIR said.
The case has been registered under Dispur Police Station Case No. 446/2025, citing sections 61(2), 318(4), 336(3), and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After months of evading law enforcement, Lahkar was finally arrested and has since undergone a medical examination in accordance with procedural requirements.
Police confirmed that similar complaints against Lahkar have been lodged at various police stations throughout Assam, suggesting that the scam had a wide-reaching impact.
