Guwahati: In a bid to enhance road safety, law enforcement authorities, in collaboration with the police, conducted a joint enforcement drive recently to tackle drunken driving among picnic-goers. The operation was carried out at key checkpoints in Narengi, Khanapara, and Khanamukh.
The development came close on the heels of the Chief Minister reviewing road fatalities in the state, thoroughly analysing the reasons behind them. At the review meeting, the Chief Minister said, “While Assam has seen a dip in accident fatalities, the time period till January is very crucial to maintain these numbers. We may carry out extensive measures to ensure our roads are safe for all. We are committed to mitigating the menace of road accidents, particularly during the upcoming X-Mass, New Year, picnics, Bihu, etc.”
The initiative started in the morning when 425 vehicles heading to picnic destinations were thoroughly inspected for signs of intoxication. The checks continued in the evening, with authorities screening 460 returning vehicles to ensure compliance with traffic safety norms.
Authorities highlighted that the drive was a part of efforts to prevent alcohol-related road accidents, which tend to rise during the picnic season.
An official said, “This campaign underscores our dedication to public safety and combating reckless behaviours such as drunken driving. Similar operations will continue to be our priority.”
