Guwahati: Growing concerns over public safety have brought the spotlight back on the deteriorating state of CCTV surveillance in Guwahati. Citizens across the city are voicing strong criticism against what they describe as administrative negligence and a lack of accountability in ensuring functional surveillance.
Educational institutions, particularly schools and colleges, have come under scrutiny for failing to maintain adequate surveillance infrastructure. Despite the critical role of CCTV cameras in safeguarding students and maintaining discipline on campuses, many institutions are either partially covered or equipped with non-functional cameras.
Beyond educational spaces, major city routes such as Chandmari, GS Road, and Beltola, along with several dimly-lit alleys and bylanes, remain without active surveillance. This lack of coverage has led to increased vulnerability in crime-prone areas, with citizens reporting a rise in petty crimes and an absence of effective deterrence.
"There is a disconcerting opacity surrounding the operational status of the surveillance units," said a resident of Silpukhuri. "The public is left completely in the dark-there are no visible signs, no maintenance records. The cameras are there, but they're often just for show."
The absence of a structured maintenance protocol has further aggravated the situation. Residents emphasized the importance of routine upkeep, including regular calibration, data checks, and footage storage to ensure operational readiness.
"Installing cameras is only half the job. Regular maintenance is non-negotiable if we want them to work when needed," said a Chandmari resident. "It's shocking how often footage goes missing because systems weren't serviced or data wasn't backed up properly."
As concerns grow, citizens are calling for a city-wide audit of surveillance infrastructure and the introduction of a transparent, tech-backed maintenance framework to restore public trust and ensure urban safety.
