GUWAHATI: A massive eviction drive has been launched in Birubari locality of Guwahati, with an aim of dismantling illegal structures in the area. The campaign was initiated in the early hours of Thursday and so far, eleven residential structures have been demolished.

The groundwork for this action was established weeks in advance, with local authorities issuing formal eviction notices to residents in the affected area. Those living in the targeted locations were instructed to vacate their homes, and a final warning was issued prior to the demolition. A significant police presence, accompanied by heavy machinery, was deployed to facilitate the execution of the eviction orders.

The primary focus of this operation is the vicinity of the Trunk Factory in Birubari. Approximately 25 days ago, families facing eviction were officially notified of the impending action. Even though some residents have resorted to legal recourse, with 45 of the 69 affected families having filed petitions in the High Court seeking relief, the administrative measures have gone on for those who have not approached the courts.

Authorities stressed that the eviction operation will go on as per requirements, clearing all remaining illegal buildings. The situation remains tense, with the resettled populations struggling to deal with the intricacies of legal matters and local authorities imposing their directives to displace the residents. The process reflects the difficulties of housing governance and urbanization in fast-developing cities like Guwahati.
