GUWAHATI: In a major step towards economic inclusion and gender empowerment, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Thursday launched a pioneering initiative to support Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) women entrepreneurs by waiving lease fees in designated market spaces.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania formally announced the initiative at the Beltola Weekly Market, where the policy is being implemented first. Under this programme, SC/ST women running small businesses in GMC-reserved stalls at weekly markets will no longer have to pay lease fees — a move aimed at reducing financial pressure and ensuring greater business stability.
“This is a landmark step towards ensuring that our women entrepreneurs, who are the backbone of our communities, receive the support they need to thrive,” said Mayor Sarania during the launch event. He emphasized that the initiative recognizes the invaluable contributions of SC/ST women to the local economy and seeks to create a more equitable environment for entrepreneurship.
