GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has imposed fines on several commercial establishments for encroaching on footpaths. On Friday, GMC penalized four shops in Adabari, charging Rs 500 each for obstructing the pedestrian pathways. In a separate action at Chabipul, a fine of Rs 2,000 was levied for similar violations.
Officials stated that such encroachments severely create inconvenience for pedestrians and pose safety hazards, prompting stricter enforcement measures. The GMC has warned that regular inspections will continue, and stricter penalties may follow for repeat offenders. The civic body urged shop owners to cooperate and keep the city’s public spaces free from obstructions to ensure smooth movement for all.
