Guwahati: In a stern move to deter irresponsible waste disposal, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) fined a resident of Bhaskar Nagar Rs 4,000 for dumping garbage into a public drain, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The improper disposal led to a blockage in the drainage system, increasing the risk of water-logging and potential health hazards in the locality. This action forms part of GMC’s ongoing citywide cleanliness drive aimed at curbing unsanitary practices and promoting responsible civic behaviour.

“Such actions not only disrupt the city’s drainage infrastructure but also result in severe environmental and public health issues,” a GMC spokesperson said. The official further urged residents to follow proper waste disposal norms and cooperate with municipal guidelines.

GMC has also announced plans to strengthen surveillance and impose heavier penalties for repeat violations. The civic body reiterated its commitment to ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable Guwahati through strict enforcement and public awareness.
