GUWAHATI: In a determined bid to combat Guwahati’s recurring flood woes, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched an intensive cleanup operation targeting the Basistha River—one of the city’s vital water channels. The initiative aims to restore the river’s natural flow, which has been severely obstructed by years of unchecked waste dumping and encroachment.

Heavy machinery, including excavators and sludge removers, has been deployed around the clock to remove accumulated waste, debris, and silt choking the river. The operation is being treated as a high-priority urban infrastructure mission, with GMC officials coordinating closely with multiple civic departments.

Speaking on the drive, a GMC official emphasized the importance of public cooperation. “The health of our rivers directly affects the safety and wellbeing of our city. We urge citizens to stop roadside garbage dumping and take collective responsibility for maintaining a clean and flood-resilient Guwahati,” the official stated. The Corporation also appealed to residents through social media and public announcements, urging them to join hands in preserving the city’s water bodies. “Let’s do our part by keeping our rivers clean and pollution-free!” read a GMC statement.

With the monsoon season approaching, officials hope that this cleanup will significantly reduce flood risks in several flood-prone zones of the city.
