GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has reported a historic performance in the financial year 2024-25, solidifying its reputation as a premier marketplace for high-quality Assam teas.

As per Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, the GTAC recorded total tea sales of 169.13 million kilograms of tea during the fiscal year, up from 166.34 million kilograms sold in the previous year. The average price per kilogram rose significantly from Rs 183.20 to Rs 227.70 — marking a remarkable increase of Rs 44.50 per kg. The estimated total turnover for the year stands at a substantial Rs 3,851 crore.

The season also witnessed record-setting prices at the auction centre. A line of Hookmool teas fetched an all-time high of Rs 751 per kg, while teas from Bejopathar fetched Rs 471 per kg, underlining strong demand and favorable prices, particularly for Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs). Notably, BLF teas from the Dhemaji district fetched the highest prices among all districts in Assam this year.

One of GTAC’s biggest advantages remains its low cost of tea selling, making it a preferred destination for sellers. The centre continues to distinguish itself through efficient operations and a consistent focus on high-quality offerings, further establishing its prominence in India’s tea trade landscape.

GTAC has also made significant strides in promoting single-origin Assam teas through its in-house Tea Lounge, situated within its premises. According to Dinesh Bihani, who also serves as Chairman of the GTAC Tea Lounge, the initiative has empowered tea producers to directly sell their teas to consumers at self-determined prices, boosting both brand visibility and profits.

Over the past year, the GTAC Tea Lounge has also become a popular attraction for tourists and tea enthusiasts alike. In FY 2024-25, the lounge achieved a turnover exceeding Rs 1 crore from its retail and promotional activities.

With record-breaking sales, rising prices, and expanding consumer engagement, GTAC continues to lead from the front in redefining the Indian tea auction ecosystem.
