GUWAHATI: All Assam Thela Chalak Shramik Union has raised serious concerns over the increasing exploitation and harassment faced by thela (handcart) workers across the state.
In a press statement issued by the union, they highlighted the challenges faced by these workers, particularly in urban areas where restrictions on movement and parking have severely affected their livelihoods. The union pointed out that despite the significant contributions of thela workers in transportation and small-scale goods delivery; they are often subjected to unfair treatment. Many workers have lost their lives due to accidents caused by unsafe working conditions, lack of designated lanes, and constant police harassment.
Referring to guidelines set by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the union emphasized that every thela worker should be provided at least 50 kilograms of subsidized goods per day to support their earnings. However, the state government has failed to implement such welfare measures, leaving these workers in a precarious situation.
