Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Wednesday gave a further eight weeks’ time to the respondents in a suo moto PIL case for the latest factual report to be filed on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), regarding the steps taken to remove encroachment from government land in Guwahati.

The division bench of Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice N. Unni Krishnan Nair issued the direction in a public interest litigation case (PIL (Suo Moto) 10/2018) registered suo moto on the basis of a news article published in a local English daily on October 9, 2018, regarding the administration turning a blind eye to land grabbers in the city.

On Wednesday, the bench observed that an additional affidavit had been filed on behalf of Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), on March 11, 2025, wherein the status report regarding the process of removal of encroachment over the government land has been mentioned.

In the said affidavit, it is mentioned that the process of removal of the encroachment in question is going on, and some time will be taken by the authorities for completion of the process.

Taking cognisance of the above fact, the bench directed the matter to be listed after 8 (eight) weeks.

On the next date of listing, the bench said it expected the latest factual report to be filed on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro).

Earlier, the court said it expected the respondents to take prompt and appropriate steps in a matter of this nature and to bring to its notice the stand of the department concerned at the earliest, criticising their delay in doing so.
