Guwahati: Heavy downpour on Sunday plunged large parts of Guwahati into chaos, with knee-deep water submerging key areas and disrupting traffic across the city. Localities such as Hatigaon, Bamunimaidam, Silpukhri, and Wireless bore the brunt of the waterlogging, as vehicles were left stranded and commuters waded through flooded roads.

While the showers brought some relief from the heat, they also laid bare the city’s chronic drainage problems. Videos and photographs circulating on social media depicted submerged stretches and vehicles stalled in waterlogged streets—familiar scenes that underscore Guwahati’s recurring urban flooding crisis.

Residents voiced their frustration over the worsening road conditions. “One spell of rain and this area gets clogged badly. We find it very difficult to ride in such a situation. Moreover, the flyover construction is ongoing. So any debris on the road gets submerged due to waterlogging, sometimes leading to accidents,” said a Chandmari resident.

Despite repeated promises and multiple urban infrastructure projects, the city continues to suffer from flash floods every monsoon. Overflowing drains and lack of regular de-silting have only exacerbated the issue, turning daily commutes into risky undertakings during rain spells.

With the monsoon season far from over, citizens are calling for immediate action from the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and allied departments to address drainage failures and ensure safe and accessible roads during rains.
