GUWAHATI: The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) Cell of Paschim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya, in collaboration with Vidya Bharati Uchcha Shiksha Sansthan Assam Prant, organized an International Symposium titled “Interpreting the Bhagavad Gita as a Guide for Contemporary Challenges” on May 24. The symposium was presided over by the principal of the college, Dr Manisha Bhattacharyya. The felicitation of invited guests was carried out by Assistant Professor Dr Priyanka Banerjee from the Department of Education. The event began with a devotional recital of the Saraswati Vandana by college students, followed by a ceremonial lighting of the lamp by special dignitaries. Dr Bhattacharyya then delivered a warm welcome address to the attendees.

The objective of the symposium was outlined by Dr Debahari Talukdar of Gauhati University, representing Vidya Bharati Uchcha Shiksha Sansthan Assam Prant. He emphasized the need to revisit ancient Indian wisdom as a response to modern-day issues.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of the chief guest, Dr Darmayasa from Indonesia. Dr Darmayasa, renowned for translating the Bhagavad Gita into Indonesian—a version that reached its 25th edition in just two and a half years—has been a dedicated teacher of meditation and the Gita for over four decades.

In his address, Dr Darmayasa inspired attendees to read a single verse from the Bhagavad Gita each day, stating that such a practice can lead to profound personal transformation. He stressed the relevance of the scripture for younger generations who are growing up amid global unrest and the threat of nuclear conflict. He also emphasized the importance of teaching the Gita to children as a means of cultivating inner peace and resilience, stated a press release.
