GUWAHATI: In a decisive step toward enhancing road safety and improving urban mobility, the Kamrup Metropolitan District Road Safety Committee convened a high-level meeting on Saturday. The meeting was held under the leadership of District Commissioner and Committee president Sumit Sattawan and focused on implementing strategic measures to reduce road accidents and streamline traffic in the city. Starting at 2 pm, the meeting brought together key stakeholders, including District Development Commissioner Parijat Bhuyan, Special Duty Officer and In-Charge District Transport Officer Gautam Das, DCP (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora, Enforcement District Transport Officer Rajiv Kumar Pegu, and senior officials from departments such as Public Works, Health, Education, and Excise.

District Commissioner Sattawan emphasized the urgent need to curb road accidents and fatalities while ensuring a safe and efficient transport system across Kamrup Metro. He urged all departments to work in a coordinated and timely manner to fulfil their respective responsibilities. The committee took several crucial decisions aimed at both immediate and long-term road safety improvements. These include the cleaning of roadside drains in vulnerable and high-traffic areas before the onset of monsoon to prevent waterlogging. Additionally, water-suction machines will be deployed in flood-prone zones like Tarun Nagar and Anil Nagar to mitigate artificial flooding. To alleviate traffic congestion, the service road from Nalapara to Beharbari will be converted into a one-way route. Furthermore, several ‘No Parking’ zones will be introduced in critical city areas to improve traffic flow. The administration also ordered the immediate removal of temporary stalls and unauthorized parking in front of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital to ensure unimpeded emergency access and public safety.
