GUWAHATI: Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania provided financial assistance of Rs. 1,20,000 to each of the four families whose homes were severely damaged due to a pipe burst in Kharghuli.
The pipe burst was reportedly caused by a pressure surge triggered by a power interruption during the installation preparations for surge protection tanks at the Kharghuli Water Treatment Plant (WTP).
The district administration, under the JICA-assisted Guwahati Water Supply Project (GWSP), sanctioned a total compensation of Rs. 4,80,000 for the affected individuals. Each of the four families, whose homes were deemed "severely damaged," were provided Rs. 1,20,000 as part of the relief measures.
The compensation was given to Anowar Hussain, Abu Fateh Ahmed, Moumin Sheikh, and Binita Das.
Earlier, Assam Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah assured the public that the affected families would be fairly compensated. He later reiterated this commitment in a post on the micro-blogging platform X, announcing the disbursal of the funds.
He stated, “Under the guidance of Hon'ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa Dangoriya and in line with the assurance I gave this morning, the Mayor has handed over the compensation amounts to the four families severely affected by the water supply pipeline explosion in Kharghuli, as per the district administration's assessment. I assure you that the compensation for the remaining families will be released soon.”
