GUWAHATI: In the light of Assam chief minister Himanta Bswa Sarma's appeal to people from different strata of society to make this New Year's Eve accident- free, a meeting was held on Friday by the District Road Safety Committee at the Kamrup (Metro) DC's office.

The Assam CM has saying often at meetings recently that no family should witness a tragedy on the occasion of Christmas and New Year's Eve. He has been appealing for road safety and against drink driving during these occasions and during picnics.

This important meeting was chaired by Kamrup (M) DC Pallav Gopal Jha and attended by District Road Safety Committee member- secretary Hemanta Deuri Bharali, ADC Dr Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Hiranya Barman, Assistant Commissioner of Transport with additional duty of Kamrup (M) DTO Gautam Das, Transport Officer Himangshu Kumar Das, Regional Transport Authority Rafikul Islam, MVI Joysingh Rongfar, officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), along with other officials of different departments involved in road safety.

At the start of the meeting, Assistant Transport Commissioner Gautam Das asked all concerned officials from different departments related to road safety to make the CM's appeal of celebrating an accident- free New Year's Eve a reality by extending their unflinching support to all endeavour aimed towards that end.

Kamrup (M) DC Pallav Gopal Jha informed that a set of rules has been put in place for picnickers in and around the city of Guwahati. All picnickers have to clean up the place after enjoying a picnic, he said. Jha also said that high decibel music is being banned in places like Deepor Beel and other places where migratory birds roost. Picnickers have to abide by a time table and other rules.

It was also decided in the meet that a sharp eye will be kept on drivers in the interest of road safety. After e- ticketing, special emphasis was placed by the DC on city bus stands. The DC asked all officers to ensure that the bus stands at Bonda, Basistha and Azara are made hassle- free.

ADC Dhrubajyoti Hazarika, in his turn, asked the transport, excise and police departments to carry out strict checks on drink driving and other illegal activities.

Traffic DCP Hiranya Barman appealed for all accident- prone areas in the district to be identified and their weak points to be corrected.
