GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced plans to revamp the Fancy Bazaar parking lot, a facility that has been plagued by complaints of poor maintenance and inadequate infrastructure.

Inaugurated in 2020, the parking lot was initially hailed as a solution to the growing traffic congestion in Fancy Bazaar, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the Northeast. However, the facility quickly became a source of frustration for residents and commuters, who cited issues such as waterlogging, muddy conditions, and poor traffic management.

“The condition of this parking lot is terrible. Vehicles get stuck all the time. Parking here should be convenient, not a nightmare,” said a resident of Jail Road.

Drivers who frequently use the lot also shared their grievances. “We pay parking fees, but the facilities are horrible. Cars are blocked with no proper exit routes, and there’s no alternative parking available outside,” said a driver. In response to these complaints, GMDA officials have assured residents that the issues are being addressed. A GMDA spokesperson stated, “We are aware of the problems at the Fancy Bazaar parking lot and are taking steps to resolve them. The parking lot will be revamped soon. Once fully operational, we expect it to generate Rs. 40-50 lakh per annum in revenue.” Revamp is expected to address critical issues, including drainage improvements, enhanced vehicle management systems, and an overall upgrade to create a smoother and more user-friendly parking experience.
