Guwahati: NEET, PCBA hold Sishu Mela across Kamrup (M) and Sonitpur districts

Guwahati: NEET’s Sishu Mela 2024-25, a celebration of creativity, learning, and critical expression North East Educational Trust (NEET), in collaboration with the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA), proudly announced the successful culmination of Sishu Mela 2024-25 across Kamrup (M) and Sonitpur districts.

The culminating event was held on 29th January 2025 at Chariduar Simanta Milan Sangha’s hall, Sonitpur, and was attended by over 400 children. A puppetry show by Arnab Putola Theatre took centre stage, captivating the audience. A book fair was also organized in the culminating event with participation from top national and state-level publication houses like Anwesha, Tulika, and NBT. NEET’s Sishu Mela 2024-25 commenced with a series of literary workshops held in 22 government schools in Sonitpur and 15 government schools in Kamrup (M) from 9th December to 14th December. A total of 949 students in Sonitpur and 549 students in Kamrup (M) participated in debates, quizzes, extempore speeches, and poetry recitations. A special drama workshop was also conducted at NEET’s Community Library in Kamrup (M). The workshops further extended to NEET’s Community Library in Kamrup (M) from 16th to 21st December 2024 and to Anubhav-NEET’s Learning Centre in Balipara block, Sonitpur, from 2nd January to 25th January 2025. Almost 150 students participated in these workshops at both locations. As part of the celebrations, a sports competition was organized on 22nd December 2024 at Jahajghat LP School, Uzanbazar, with participation from nearly 100 children. The competitions in Kamrup (M) were judged by Govinda Kalita, Secretary of the Assam Kho Kho Association. In Sonitpur, the sports competition took place on 26th January 2025 at Durga Malla Chowk’s playground with participation from almost 200 children. Lok Bahadur Thapa, a retired Naik of the 9th Gorkha Rifles, judged these sporting events. The literary competitions were held on 23rd December 2024, in Kamrup (M), and on 28th January 2025, in Sonitpur, and were participated in by 87 and 400 students, respectively, from these 37 project schools across these districts.

In Kamrup (M), the notable judges included Dr. Indranee Dutta for extempore speeches, Dipankar Koushik for the quiz competition, Pranab Bharali, Madhumita Talukdar, and Indranee Goswami for poetry recitation, and Chinmoyee Goswami for the debate competition.

In Sonitpur, the art competition was judged by Prakash Pradhan, poetry recitation, read-aloud and story-telling by Sonitjyoti Saikia, and extempore speech and debate by Manju Bhuyan.

The culmination of Sishu Mela in Kamrup (M) took place on 24th December 2024 at Satyanath Bora Hall. The event featured an engaging drama performance by the regulars of NEET’s community library and was attended by over 140 students and parents, making it a memorable celebration. Themed “Nature and Its Conservation,” Sishu Mela 2024-25 almost encouraged 1500 children to express their thoughts on environmental preservation through creative mediums.
